"Interferometry in space" project granted

Together with the Netherlands Space Office (NSO), NWO is funding three projects within existing knowledge networks to continue and renew their collaboration. The projects fall under the Partnerships for Space Instruments & Applications Preparatory Programme (PIPP).

The SPIN (SPace-based Interferometry Network) project, led by Raj Rajan (SPS), brings together scientists and industry to develop breakthrough technologies for space-based radio telescopes. Focusing on low-frequency radio waves (0.1–80 MHz), SPIN targets the last unexplored region of the cosmos—unobservable from Earth due to atmospheric interference. The network builds on the successful PIPP-BITS project and aims to coordinate multiple satellites into one powerful space-based interferometer. This will enable unprecedented studies of the early universe, solar storms, and distant planets. SPIN strengthens the Netherlands’ leadership in space science and technology, while supporting innovation in navigation, communication, autonomy, and multi-satellite mission design.
