Multi-sensor integration for broadband dielectric spectroscopy of Organ-on-Chip devices

Dielectric spectroscopy (DS) is an electromagnetic sensing technology capable of extracting tissue properties and concentrations in organ-on-chip (OoC) applications. This has been done in the MHz range using impedance spectroscopy and in the GHz range using RF spectroscopy. Both techniques yield different tissue insights, but cannot be united into a single sensor.

The goal of this project is to integrate both sensors in a single device to allow stitching of both spectra into a single broadband spectrum. The results can provide valuable new insights in tissue behaviour in OoC technology.

Assignment

This project is developed as a collaboration between ECTM (Dr. Mastrangeli) and ELCA (Dr. Spirito).
The project will include the following activities:

  • A review of state-of-the-art TEER extraction methods and microwave sensing of cells;
  • Experimenting with an existing RF spectroscopy setup;
  • Designing and manufacturing a proof-of-concept system capable of multi-sensor DS;
  • Evaluating the broadband spectrum capabilities of your manufactured device;
  • Reporting.

Requirements

You are an ambitious hands-on master student with a background in (micro)electronic, RF or bioelectrical engineering. You have an affinity for working in a multi-disciplinary context, including biology, RF engineering and (micro)fabrication. You have good communication skills in English, you are independent and a team player.

The graduation project will have a total duration of 9 to 12 months.
