Graphene Flagship core 3: Transferless graphene in sensing applications (GF-Core3)
With a budget of €1 billion, the Graphene Flagship represents a new form of joint, coordinated research on an unprecedented scale, forming Europe's biggest ever research initiative. The Graphene Flagship is tasked with bringing together academic and industrial researchers to take graphene from the realm of academic laboratories into European society in the space of 10 years, thus generating economic growth, new jobs and new opportunities. The core consortium consists of over 150 academic and industrial research groups in 23 countries. In addition, the project has a growing number of associated members.
Core 3 is the fourth funding cycle of the research initiative funded by the European Commission. In this three-year phase of the project, the Graphene Flagship expects to advance much further toward the commercialisation of graphene and layered materials. While keeping an eye on fundamental research, the Graphene Flagship Core 3 will have a special focus on innovative research to boost graphene-enabled technologies to higher technology readiness levels.
Recent results from ECTM have demonstrated the feasibility of transfer-free localized growth of multilayer graphene on wafer-scale. Studies have shown that the material has very promising properties for gas and biosensors and can be suspended as a large-area membrane. This alternative wafer-scale method to fabricate graphene sensors on silicon substrates is an interesting approach to circumvent several of the key challenges, like transfer and adhesion that still hinder high-volume high-yield production of CVD graphene on CMOS. As part of the GF Core 3 this technology will be further developed
