Digitally Modulated Radar

Opening for: PhD student

Your research will be geared to next-generation digitally modulated automotive radar.

In your research project, you will collaborate with leading players in radar systems and signal processing.

You will research novel sensing waveforms for automotive radars that resist interference and can be used in large-scale MIMO systems, as well as bi-static radar systems. Your work will include formulating and validating mathematical models and waveform design while optimizing the digital modulation.

 

Requirements

You thrive on generating and realizing ground-breaking research, which you may demonstrate by e.g. embedding your ideas into operational radar systems, demonstrating their added value in applications, publishing and patenting your ideas. Leveraging your communication skills, you’ll connect with colleagues throughout the Faculty, helping us to make our Faculty as a whole stronger. You also have to have the ability to build relevant networks and attract funding. In addition, you enjoy teaching and supervising students. Since the expected research is potentially dual-use, this position is only open to non-sensitive country nationals.

You also have:

• A Ph.D. in electrical engineering, physics, or applied mathematics.
• Demonstrable research experience in one or more relevant fields, such as remote sensing, radar, sonar, ultrasound, or telecommunication, and a drive to work and learn in this multidisciplinary domain.
• Have a proven track record in your research field, as evidenced by refereed publications in top-quality journals.
• Show the potential to be an inspired and dedicated teacher.
• Excellent command of English, as TU Delft is an internationally diverse community.

Additional information

In The Netherlands, almost all PhD positions are linked to funded research projects. This has several implications:

• PhD students are employed: they receive a salary rather than a grant. Most projects have a duration of 4 years.
• Positions become available once a project is funded. This can happen at any time during the year.
• It typically takes 6 to 9 months for a project proposal to receive funding. In this period, a position may be anticipated but the outcome remains insecure. Once a project is funded, the open position needs to be filled as soon as possible.

General requirements

We make our selection based on the following general requirements:

• Formal requirements regarding prior education: you should have earned an MSc degree at a recognized institute for higher education.
• Background: you should have a background that fits the requirements of the project
• Excellence: your Grade-Point-Average should be above 8 (10). Also your MSc thesis should have received a grade above 8 (10).
• English: you should be able to communicate well in english (written and oral). Provide TOEFL/IELTS scores if available.
• Originality: your MSc thesis or later work (publications) should reflect some original ideas. Critical and independent thinking is very important.
• Team player: you should be able to work well in a team of other project members.
