Interfacing Resonant Sensors using Ringdown Measurement (RINGDOWN)

The transient ring-down of resonant sensors is used to extract information about the sensor's resonance frequency and quality factor in a highly energy-efficient manner.
In this project, we investigated energy-efficient readout circuits for micro-machined resonant sensors. Rather than using conventional readout approaches, such as incorporating the sensor in a oscillator or measuring its electrical impedance as a function of frequency, our approach is to use the ring-down transient of the sensor to extract information about its resonance frequency and quality factor. Several prototype readout circuits have been realized which are significantly more energy efficient than the state-of-the-art.
